Ghurka Officer’s Field Set

Only three of these were ever made.

When Ghurka with Richard Wrightman on the Officer’s Field Set for their 40th anniversary, we had the chance to visit his studio in Long Island City. Walking in felt like stepping into another universe.

Downstairs was the wood and leather shop. Upstairs, a space for shoots and gatherings. And tucked away was a magically curated area for thinking and ideating.

The brief sounded really simple on paper: design two folding chairs and a table compact enough to fit in the boot of a grand tourer.

The solution? A leather-clad trunk that housed the chairs and doubled as the table itself.

Only three Officer’s Field Sets were made. It debuted at Fortnum & Mason in London, and one was presented to Prince Charles in honor of his long association with the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

It featured a leather-lined trunk, folding field chairs, a whip-stitched merino wool blanket, leather cushions, and a field umbrella by Francesco Maglia Milano.

What stayed with us? The environment these were created in. Whether it’s travel goods or accessories, the goal is the same: build the conditions where good design can happen.
