Surface Magazine & Ghurka
There are certain chapters in your career that stay with you long after you’ve moved on. My years at Ghurka are one of those chapters.
When Surface Magazine came to do a “How It’s Made” feature, I was one of the main points of contact. I led the factory walk through, shared the backstory of the brand, and tried to give a sense of the care that went into every step of the process.
I haven’t shared the article until now because there’s a small misquote in it that has always made me pause. I used a quick “cookie cutter” analogy to help the interviewer visualize the die-cutting process, and it ended up being printed as if it were the actual terminology. Anyone who works in leather, sample making, or product development knows how precise and skilled that work is, and I have a deep respect for that community. That’s why the line made me cringe.
But with some distance, I’ve been thinking about how much that time shaped me. I came into Ghurka with a strong understanding of leather, but working with Luis taught me what luxury bag making really looks like: the architecture behind it, the hand-cutting, the integrity of construction, and how to build something where the quality of the materials and the method are the whole point. It was the kind of foundation I believe you need before you can ever rethink or break the rules.
I’m thankful for those years.
