Category Ideation

Some of the best product ideas come from entirely different categories.

I started in menswear, designing shirting and outerwear at Club Monaco. Years later, working in travel goods and accessories, I still find myself reaching back to those projects.

A few examples:
• Waxed cotton moved from field jackets into backpacks and messengers
• Waterproof coatings and seam construction found their way from rainwear into dry bags and travel products
• Venting details and grommets used in apparel can solve challenges in bags that need airflow
• Leather trim and aging materials translate naturally from jackets to luggage and accessories

The image shown here is from my ALMS days, where we intentionally looked to motorcycle jackets as inspiration for the Daypack. The seaming, paneling, and material story all came from an iconic apparel item.

The longer I do the work, the less I think in categories.

Outerwear - Luggage - Accessories - Footwear - Furniture - and even Automotive - At their core, they're all solving problems through materials, construction, and form.
